<image:caption>Summeta, 31, from a small village in Kunda, Pratapgarh district, Uttar Pradesh, sold all her jewelry and household belongings to try to secure the release of her husband from jail. Her husband was arrested in 2025 under the anti-conversion law and has remained in jail for over two months. With no income left, her children went hungry for days, and neighbors stopped speaking to the family following the arrest. She has been left to manage her children and the legal battle alone, describing the period as one of the most difficult moments of her life. Despite the hardship, she continues to place her faith in Jesus Christ, believing it will help her endure the crisis. Friday, January 23, 2026 (Photo/Suhail Bhat)</image:caption>

<image:title>Journalism - In Japan, Takaichi’s Election is a Political Milestone. But Women Remain Divided on What’s Next. - Some women in advocacy and academia remain skeptical about Japan’s progress on gender equality. Yoshiko Hayashi, a former Asahi Shimbun journalist and a doctoral student at Ochanomizu University who studies sexual harassment of women journalists, points to deep-rooted structural barriers. Japan ranked 118th out of 148 countries in the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Global Gender Gap Report released in June — last among G7 nations. Hayashi attributes the low ranking to entrenched patriarchy, conservative social norms and cultural pressures that discourage women from speaking out.</image:title>

<image:title>Journalism - The Kenyan Women at the Frontlines of Sea Turtle Conservation - After a full day of diving and research, the divers head back to their respective offices. Each photograph they took is then scored for clarity, focus, and lighting before being added to their catalogue. Once the turtle pictures are verified, they are uploaded into a database used by researchers worldwide to track sea turtle populations and migration patterns. Mainye’s journey to marine science didn’t begin underwater, but in front of a television set. Growing up, she was mesmerized by the divers portrayed in National Geographic documentaries. “Those documentaries caught my attention and made me want to take action.”</image:title>

<image:title>Journalism - How Firearm Access Fuels Domestic Violence Tragedies - Doreen Dodgen-Magee was among the people who testified in support of creating Oregon’s law. Thirty years ago, she held a party on the eve of her niece’s first day of kindergarten. Family and loved ones filled Sarah’s backpack with love notes and well wishes. The next day, Dodgen-Magee got a phone call saying Sarah’s father had shot and killed Sarah, her younger siblings, Rachel and April, and their mother, Laura, in a fit of jealous rage. He also shot Dodgen-Magee’s mother-in-law, Margaret, who survived but needed a caretaker for the rest of her life.</image:title>

<image:caption>Still, life in the fields remains far from safe for many women. Decades ago, Gite brought her twin baby girls home as a teen mother, struggling quietly with the hysterectomy that had been done on her without her consent. Eighteen months after giving birth to her twin, tragedy struck: Both daughters died within a week of each other. Rajushri Vaudiv Gite stands at the doorway of her tin-roofed home, gazing into the distance. Her husband remarried, believing she could never conceive again after her hysterectomy. Blamed by her in-laws as "unlucky," Rajushri now faces life’s burdens in solitude. Photo: Suhail Bhat for More to Her Story</image:caption>
